Industrial Uses
1. Strontium is used in the glass of color Cathode Ray Televisions.
Strontium is used to prevent unwanted emissions from escaping in CRT's (pictured left). It's ability to absorb energy, similar, but not as strong as, lead. Over 75% of Strontium goes to this application in the form of strontium oxide (SrO). Strontium oxide is created when pure Strontium if burned in oxygen.

2. Strontium is used in pyrotechnics.
Strontium, in forms of it's salts specifically Strontium carbonate (SrCO3), is used to color fireworks and flares. It's flammability and unique Emission Spectrum make it useful. It releases a deep red color. Strontium carbonate, for this purpose, consumes about 5% of strontium production. It is a common mineral in the crust of the earth and is mined worldwide.

3. Strontium is used to power radioisotope engines.
Strontium is used as a power source in Radioisotope thermoelectric generators that are used in space craft and other unmanned, remote vehicles (like pictured left). Strontium-90's radioactive properties make it perfect to power these generators. However Pu-238 is preferred. It is synthesized through nuclear fission.
